A Guide to Semrush Keyword Magic Tool

Today at Inspiral, we thought to give it a turn to the usual content we bring to our readers and make a review/guide of one of the semrush tools: keyword magic tool.

As you already know from following our weekly blogs, there is no room for improvisation in the worlds of marketing strategies and search engines. If you want to rank higher on the search results page, you need some digital tools to help you find keyword suggestions that fit your goals or your clients.

Here is where a keyword tool such as the one Semrush offers will come in handy to help you come up with a list of keywords useful to your overall SEO strategy.

For first time users, the tool can be a little too much. There are too many options at your disposal, several filters you can apply, and this can produce an overwhelming feeling.

Of course, this is not something inheritably bad. There is a reason why this tool is one of the most used keyword tools in the market. Once you get a hold of it, it will certainly look a lot easier than the first time.

What you can do on the tool.

Before start using any keyword tool, you must know what is your target keyword and the country where you want to rank for this particular search query.

Once you have that, you will type the keyword on the search bar, and the tool will provide you with the following results:

  • Keyword difficulty: the higher the percentage, the higher will be the number of resources you or your client will have to spend to rank for that particular keyword. Be careful not to go down a rabbit hole.

    Keyword volume: this gives you the number of monthly searches for a particular search term. The keywords with the highest search volume are usually the most difficult as well. These keywords are reserved for companies with large budgets in the advertising department. This particular stat can help you to have some insights about google trends.
  • Keyword intent: this is probably one of the greatest features of this tool. Every time a user goes online, they have an intention. Some keywords will be more suited for informative content, others will help you to convert that potential click into a sale of your product or service. Be mindful about keyword intention, so you do not waste your efforts on keywords that will not bring you the desired results.
  • CPC or cost per click: are you thinking about creating a PPC campaign? The keyword magic tool will tell you how much it will cost a click for that particular query. Usually, the top-ranking keywords will be the most expensive ones.
  • SERP features: some keywords favor blocks of content, others favor more visual content. The SERP features will give a hint over how you can optimize your content to get the most out of your efforts.
  • Last update: let us remember that Semrush is basically a database. Like all databases, it needs to get updates for the items it holds. The most popular keywords will almost always be up to date. Be mindful
  • Lacking keyword ideas? The tool gives you the option to filter your search term by broad match, phrase match, exact match, and related. The latter will be your best ally when it comes to finding new opportunities to rank your brand for different keywords. The related filter will provide you with keyword suggestions that are close to your original search.

With all that information available, you should be able to come up with a list of keywords and a keyword strategy to create a great blog post and capitalize on the opportunities in the digital marketing era.

What you can do after the search.

Once you find the right keyword for you and your business intention, there are several things you can follow the process and get the desired results. You can select keywords and send them to:

  • Keyword manager: here, you will be able to organize the different keywords you find and get updates about the metrics for these keywords.
  • SEO content template: here, the bots and crawlers of Semrush will recollect the data from your selected keyword and give you the best tips to create the content you intend.

  • Position tracking: did you decide to jump to the water and use one of the keywords you found during your research period? Good. Now it is time for you to track how that keyword is performing in the searches result. Send the keyword from the keyword manager tool to position tracking to keep a closer look at your efforts.

How can you complement the use of keyword magic tool?

As usual, no single tool will give everything you need to know about your performance on the web. To get the most accurate data, you should complement the use of the tool with at least some of the following websites.

  • Google Search Console.
  • Google Analytics.
  • Google keyword planner (this one just to have another perspective about the keywords you found on the Semrush tool).
